Use |
Norvasc is used to lower high blood pressure (hypertension). There are usually no symptoms of hypertension. The only way of knowing that you have hypertension is to have your blood pressure checked on a regular basis. If high blood pressure is not treated it can lead to serious health problems.
Generic Norvasc belongs to a group of medicines called calcium channel blockers or calcium ion antagonists. They work by widening your blood vessels, making it easier for your heart to pump blood around the body and help increase the supply of blood and oxygen to your heart. Calcium channel blockers do not change the amount of calcium in your blood or bones.
Generic Norvasc is also used to treat angina pectoris. Angina is a pain or uncomfortable feeling in the chest, often spreading to the arms or neck, and sometimes to the shoulders and back. The pain of angina is due to a shortage of oxygen to the heart. |

Generally, you should take Norvasc once a day, with or without food. You can take Norvasc with most drinks, including grapefruit juice. Try to take your dose at the same time each day, for example, after breakfast or at bedtime.
If you miss a dose, you should take NORVASC as soon as you remember, unless it has been more than 12 hours since you missed your dose. If it has been more than 12 hours, just wait and take the next dose at your regular time. Avoid taking two doses at the same time or closely together |

People allergic to the active ingredient in Norvasc (amlodipine) cannot use Norvasc. Breast-feeding women should not use Norvasc, as it is not known whether Norvasc passes into breast-milk, and it is possible that Norvasc would harm the nursing baby. Before you take Norvasc, tell your physician about any medical condition you have and any drugs you may be taking, including prescription and non-prescription medications. Do not take more than one dose of Norvasc at a time. If you accidentally take more than you were directed, call a physician immediately.
The most common side effects of Norvasc are swelling in the feet or ankles, headache, feeling tired, or feeling dizzy. If you experience any of these and they do not go away by themselves, or you experience a more bothersome effect, consult a physician as soon as possible.
